RSS and information overload!

RSS could be used in many useful ways in libraries, but for subscribers to lots of blogs, news sites and other general internet information, the amount of information could be quite overwhelming to say the least!!

RSS could be used to let subscribers know about new and interesting things that are going on at their library.

This is the NBN CEO Mike Quigley meeting with Kiama Mayor Sandra McCarthy at Kiama Library. Mike was touring the area to see and discuss the progress of the NBN installation in the area.

Kiama Library

As you all know, I am lucky enough to work at the lovely Kiama Library - a very aesthetic and well designed building which creates such a great environment for patrons and staff. Kiama Library was recently connected to the NBN (National Broadband Network) and is currently collaborating with the Kiama Community College to provide training and greater awareness to the general public about the opportunities and possibilities it will provide. There is plenty going on all the time and certainly many challenges with keeping abreast of the new technology available and what it means for the library.

Flickr

Flickr seems like another amazing tool that I didn't know much about before. Personally, I don't think I will be sharing with anyone much other than my family, but I can see this would be a great way to store and 'play around' with photos.
As far as libraries are concerned, Flickr would be a great tool for storing photos of all kinds and sharing news and views with the general public and other libraries.  It is a great tool for creating awareness of what the library has in its collection especially now that everything, including photos, is being digitised.

The Mitchell Library section of the NSW State Library - an awesome place to visit and spend time.
Blogs are an extremely useful tool for libraries, whether they are used for communication between staff members or to give the public information about what is going on at the library. As long as it is kept up-to-date, a blog is another appealing way to keep information flowing in the modern world.

State Library of NSW

Visited the State Library last Wednesday and had a brilliant day - so many interesting things to see and so much information to absorb. The State Library staff are very innovative in their approach to adopting new technology to promote their various programmes, exhibitions and activities. Definately worthy of a visit from the LIS students!!

First Blog Ever!

As part of my Library and Information Service course I am starting a blog to muse about the technological changes  that are effecting how we think about libraries today and how we, as librarians, will utilise and stay abreast of these changes.
